Curiosity
This article combines two trains of thought. One looks at curiosity as a manifestation of eros and its biological precursors, celebrating it as one of the strongest counter-forces against the paralysing transgenerational effects of psychic trauma. The other situates the boundary-crossing and boundary-violating potential of curiosity in the cultural history of sin and distinguishes it from the species of creative curiosity that has had limitations imposed on it by oedipal transformation, thus turning it into a component of growth-inducive symbolisation energy. On this basis, the author casts light on the transgressive role of curiosity in metapsychology (significance of epistemophilia for Sigmund Freud, Melanie Klein, Wilfred Bion, Warren Poland, Jacques Lacan) and psychoanalytic treatment, illustrating his points with reference to a number of clinical vignettes taken from the psychoanalysis of a child.

Bonding and Aggression among the Mosuo – A matrilineal society in China
Traditionally, the Mosuo-families in southwestern China consist of only matrilineal blood relatives. The culture has always been peaceful. Brothers and sisters take care of the children of the sisters. They have no marriage-system and the children are not related with their fathers. The paper reports on impressions of the life of this ethnical group that is in the midst of dramatic cultural changes: how do children grow and develop into the families with many mothers and no fathers?

Old in New, New in Old
Before a child is born, its parents will transfer to it their experiences of their own infancy and also experiences with their present partner. If these experiences are positive, the attendant transfer of love, trust, and affection will contribute to the baby’s successful psychic development. But if the projection is negative, the relationship with the child will be overshadowed even before birth by feelings of disinclination and mistrust. The child embodies not only itself but also other important objects, so there is no scope for curiosity about, and discovery of, the child itself. In fact, the negative projections prompt the parents to protect themselves from the child, while the infant internalizes the feeling that there is something wrong with it or that it arouses fear in the parents. The psychoanalytic process can remedy this situation by foregrounding transference and countertransference and enabling parents to separate old, undesirable objects from the new object – their child. Only then can what Winnicott calls a «potential space» take shape. Here the parents can find, acknowledge, and give a positive cathexis to the child, while the child can simply be itself. With reference to Thomas Bernhard’s short story Ein Kind and a clinical case, the author enlarges on the theoretical implications of the issue.
