The Autonomy of Sound and the Structure of the Subject – In his book entitled Die Autonomie des Klangs [The Autonomy of Sound], Gunnar Hindrichs uses five categories – sound, time, space, meaning and idea – to develop an ontology of the musical work of art. The present article investigates the systematic significance of structures of subjectivity for the foundations of a philosophy of music oriented towards the concept of the musical work of art. This takes place in a critical analysis focusing especially on Hindrichs’s theory of the categories of meaning and the temporal form of a musical work of art, as well as the interpretation of the problematics of the work concept in the music of the second half of the twentieth century.
