The Jazz Trombonist Nils Wogram: His Compositional and Instrumental Output – The processually changing musical development of Nils Wogram is examined here, using three examples that reveal some of the particularities of his personal style. The compositions Construction Field and Annoying Neighbor are used to demonstrate compositional techniques that are paradigmatic for Wogram’s early style and reveal his engagement with European art music: constant changes of metre, polymetres, asymmetrical and ›prosaic‹ rhythms, polyphony and free atonality. Twenty Four, a quarter-tone blues, serves as an example of Wogram’s current musical language, where compositional methods are simplified to place greater emphasis on the improvisational element. Finally, the author elucidates Wogram’s trombone aesthetic, which is articulated in a highly virtuosic, controlled and timbrally varied playing approach.
