Heißenbüttel: A Musical Portrait – After the Second World War, the connections between advanced literature and advanced music had largely been severed; each side was initially concerned with itself. This alienation was particularly evident in Stuttgart: at first the painters of the Baumeister circle dominated, but later the literary figures gathered around Max Bense. The Society of New Music was not founded until the 1960s. During that time, it was the writer Helmut Heißenbüttel who brought about an inter-aesthetic rapprochement via the detour of John Cage.
