Retroactive transcriptions: »Nachträglichkeit« in the professional correspondence between Sigmund Freud and Karl Abraham. – The unabridged correspondence between Sigmund Freud and Karl Abraham has finally been made available in the original German. It affords insights into the role played by their written exchanges in the development of their psychoanalytic concepts. Freud disagrees with Abraham’s one-sidedly genetic notions on the destructive-sadistic aspects of orality and on early object relations. While he proves to be a patient tutor and supervisor for the younger man, this does nothing to soften the critical admonitions addressed to Abraham all the way through to the very last letters, reminding him in no uncertain terms to pay due heed to the fundamental conditions operative in the materialization of neuroses. For Freud, the results of Abraham’s clinical observations were a valuable confirmation of his own ideas on the pathology of early disorders. The author traces the development of these different approaches in the professional correspondence between Freud and Abraham, focusing on the etiological problem of the genesis of neuroses against the background of »Nachträglichkeit« (retroactive transcription). The article closes with a brief outline of the further development of the relevant concepts after Abraham’s death.
How unsaturated interpretations take shape: Figurability in action. – The article proposes a new concept of interpretation that can be described as open, inspired, libidinous, illustrative, narrative, incomplete, and non-explicatory. There are links between this concept and the notions of unsaturated interpretation and figurability. In its further course, the article focuses on three ways of arriving at unsaturated interpretations and illustrates them with reference to case vignettes: transformation into figures, into dreams, and into narratives. In conceptual terms, the author proposes an extension of countertransference to encompass imaginative, dream-generated (hallucinatory), and narrative elements. Subsequently there is a discussion of the extent to which it is justified to refer to unsaturated interpretations as interpretations in the first place. The author advocates a reevaluation of the wish fulfillment associated with them, suggesting that by facilitating retroactive revisions, an evolution in emotional experience, and a new relational reality, this aspect in fact makes it easier »for psychoanalysis to start flowing« in sessions with patients.
