Beschreibung

What is the reference to when it comes to »Bion’s late work«? Not to his autobiographical writings, at any rate, and certainly not to his literary works. The British psychoanalyst Wilfred Bion explored art – especially literature – throughout his life. In the development of his work, one can observe a successive approach to and recourse to art as an independent mode of knowledge and cognition. This process culminates in what can be characterized as an »aesthetic« or »literary turn.« At the heart of this is a conscious rejection of the hope that objects and phenomena with which psychoanalysis is concerned can be adequately grasped or even brought into view by the scientific method based on »classical logic.« During the last years of his life, Bion wrote »A Memoir of the Future«, a trilogy of science fiction novels consisting of three novels (published 1975–1979), which Bion described as a »fictitious account of a psycho-analysis including an artificially constructed dream.« The reception of this trilogy of novels has been dismissive to outright hostile from the beginning; it is largely ignored to this day. Yet it is nothing less than the logical continuation of Bion’s œuvre as a whole by other means. The paper shows that and how »A Memoir of the Future« makes the transition to another, new dimension of self-reflection as science and science as self-reflection, as the founding document of psychoanalysis, Freud’s »Interpretation of Dreams«, had already undertaken, only with a more radical consequence.

Wilfred Bions »A Memoir of the Future«

Wilfred Bion’s central late opus, the fictional trilogy »A Memoir of the Future« (1975–1979), has received little attention in the psychoanalytic discourse conducted in German. Reception is admittedly difficult, not only because of the absence of a translation but also due to the unapproachability and the formidable complexity of the work. In his trilogy, Bion is not interested in advancing new psychoanalytic theories or discussing clinical facts. Instead, he is concerned to find a diction and a form that arouses immediate emotional experience. Accordingly, this readers’ report is less an account of content than an attempt at investigating the effects the work exerts on its readers. Bion’s memoir is a severe test of the ability to bear the uncertainties of not-knowing and not-understanding and hence to resist the temptation to take refuge in reassuringly well-established categories, which would countervail any prospect of a genuinely new experience. The authors use a detailed analysis of a chapter from the first volume of the trilogy to describe and discuss the potentialities for an engagement with the work.
