Die Gründung des »International Journal of Psychoanalysis« (IJP) wird in Zusammenhang mit anderen Zeitschriften aus der Frühzeit der Psychoanalyse gestellt. Sie erfolgte 1919/20 mit dem Erscheinen der ersten Ausgabe im Juli 1920, inhaltlich und strukturell nach dem Vorbild der 1912 und 1913 von Freud und den Mitgliedern des sogenannten Geheimen Komitees gegründeten Zeitschriften »Imago« und »Internationale Zeitschrift für Ärztliche Psycho­analyse«. Alle drei sollten – etwa gegen Adlers Individualpsychologie und Jungs Modifikationen der Libidotheorie gerichtet – die Einhaltung eines Denkens gewährleisten, das den Freud’schen Grundlegungen der Psychoanalyse und seiner Metapsychologie folgte. Diente das IJP anfangs in starkem Maße dazu, deutsche Texte englischsprachigen Lesern zugänglich zu machen, entstanden im Zuge der Emigration neue wissenschaftliche Zentren außerhalb Mitteleuropas, mit denen auch eine Verschiebung von Macht und Einfluss in den internationalen psychoanalytischen Organisationen einherging.

The author situates the establishment of the »International Journal of Psychoanalysis« in the context of other journals from the early years of psychoanalysis. The Journal first saw the light of day in July 1920, in terms both of content and structure it was modeled on the journals »Imago« and »Internationale Zeitschrift für Ärztliche Psychoanalyse« launched in 1912 and 1913 by Freud and members of the so-called Secret Committee. In contradistinction to such developments as Adler’s psychology of the individual and Jung’s modifications of libido theory, all three publications were designed to represent and preserve an approach adhering to Freud’s original ideas on psychoanalysis and his metapsychology. Initially, the IJP was largely dedicated to making German articles accessible to English-speaking readers. In the course of emigration, however, new scientific centers took shape outside Central Europe involving a shift of power and influence within the international psycho­analytic organizations.

La fondation de l’ « International Journal of Psychoanalysis » est mise en relation avec celle d’autres revues de la première période de la psychanalyse. La revue a été créée en juillet 1920, sur le modèle d’Imago et de l’ « Internationale Zeitschrift für Ärztliche Psychoanalyse » fondées en 1912 et 1913 par Freud et les membres du « Comité secret ». Les trois revues entendaient – contre la psychologie individuelle d’Adler et les modifications de la théorie de la libido de Jung – affirmer les fondements de la psychanalyse et de la métapsychologie freudiennes. Si, dans un premier temps, la JPI a servi dans une large mesure à rendre les textes allemands accessibles aux lecteurs anglophones, l’émigration a donné naissance à de nouveaux pôles de recherche hors d’Europe centrale et influé sur les relations de pouvoir et d’influence dans les organisations psychanalytiques internationales.
