The speculative anthropology of »Totem and Taboo« is present in »Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego« as a form of auto-refutation of an eminently political nature. This is because the theoretical advent of a properly trans-individual structure, from which stem both the individual and the social, maximizes the tension with the evolutionist myth. But by turning the individual into an effect of the group, the new Freudian ontology of the relationship that draws on the schema of identification opens onto two opposing paths of interpretation. One of them, a regressive path, identifies the genesis of the group with the repetition of the originary parricide: it posits the regression to indistinctness on the model of hypnosis. The other, a repressive path, posits the Superego as the origin of guilt in order to conceptualize individualization as an autonomization in relation to the group.

The author sets out a number of ideas on the backgrounds and definitions of individual and mass psychology as proposed by Sigmund Freud in »Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego« and goes on to investigate how these were taken up by Theodor W. Adorno and Hans Kelsen.

Wilhelm Reich (1897–1957) was one of Freud’s most prominent pupils, and the article homes in on essential features of his biography. Compared with Freud, Reich’s image of the human individual was more positive, prompting him to derive from it more radical social criticism and to adopt blatantly »left-wing« and later anti-Fascist attitudes. This was highly instrumental in causing Reich and Freud to fall out around 1930 and the disrepute Reich fell into with the IPA as of 1933. That same year, Reich published his Mass Psychology of Fascism in which he not only builds on Freud’s insights but also elaborates on them. Reich was keen to contribute to the downfall of Fascism and to this end investigates the origins and impact of those typical character structures around which Fascist movements formed in Europe. He describes in detail how these structures come about as a result of patriarchal socialization and, more specifically, sexual oppression. He also focuses on the interaction between leaders and the led. Unlike Freud, Reich refuses to concede that leaders have »a psychology of their own,« seeing them as interchangeable figureheads accurately representing the – frequently neurotic – character structures of the mass.
