Zusammenfassung:

Die von Stephen Porges entwickelte polyvagale Theorie geht davon aus, dass bei Säugetieren die Antwort des autonomen Nervensystems auf eine Herausforderung oder Bedrohung der Entwicklungshierarchie folgt: Versagt ein höherentwickeltes System kommt ein phylogenetisch älteres System zum Zuge, um das Überleben zu sichern. Für den Menschen heißt das, dass im Normalfall mit der Erregung des ventralen Vaguskomplexes (social vagus) eine erste Orientierung und Kommunikation möglich ist, um emotionales Bindungsverhalten zu initiieren; dass bei extremer Herausforderung das sympathische Nervensystem den Körper auf die Notlage mit Kampf oder Flucht vorbereitet und dass bei extremster Bedrohung schließlich das dorsal-vagale System (DVC) aktiviert wird, was Immobilität (Freezing), Totstellreflex zur Folge hat und den Metabolismus herunterregelt. Auf der Basis dieses Wissens untersucht der Autor das Zustandekommen sicherer und unsicherer Bindungssituationen und erörtert die Rolle der Neuropetide Oxytocin und Vasopressin für die Entstehung von Liebesbindung, aber auch traumatischer Opfer-Täter-Beziehung.

Summary:

Stephen Porges’ polyvagal theory postulates that in mammals the response of the autonomous nervous system to challenge and threat reflects an evolutionary hierarchy. If a more highly developed system fails, a phylogenetically older system will take over to ensure survival. For humans this means that, in the normal case, arousal of the central vagus complex (social vagus), initial orientation, and communication are possible and will initiate emotional attachment behavior. In extreme cases, the sympathetic nervous system will prepare the body for the em ergency by triggering the propensity for battle or flight. In the face of highly extreme threat it will activate the dorsal-vagal system (DVC), leading to immobility (freezing), animal hypnosis, and a winding down of the metabolism. On the basis of this knowledge, the author investigates the development of certain and uncertain attachment situations and discusses the role of the neuropeptides oxytocin and vasopressin in the emergence both of love attachments and traumatic victim-perpetrator relations.
