From adolescence to adulthood: The significance of the integration of age-specific experiences into the psychic system of reference
On the basis of her own clinical experience and of the relevant psychoanalytic literature, the author defines the specific problems – and attempts at their solution – of late adolescence, that is, of the developmental phase between the ages of 18 and 24. The detachment from the primary object and the use of transitional objects serve as the model for the process of leaving the family of origin.
The problem of autonomy in late adolescence
Grimm's fairy-tale of »The goose-girl at the well« is interpreted as a representation of problems of adolescence. The figure of the old woman represents development itself as well as the demanding, benevolent mother. The author adds deliberations concerning the autonomy of ego functions, regression in the service of development, and questions of »technique«.
