This paper is a meditation on the potential and problems of establishing and maintaining loving and passionate relationships, drawn from a lifetime of struggling with these issues in the course of doing analysis. It describes interferences with the capacity for mature sexual love as reflecting various psychopathological conditions. These limitations include a variety of psychological restrictions determined most frequently by masochistic, narcissistic and paranoid personality features. Clinical case material illustrates both mature and disturbed capability for love relations.

Die Dependente Persönlichkeitsstörung ist charakterisiert durch Schwierigkeiten, eigenständig Entscheidungen zu treffen, durch ein übermäßiges Bedürfnis nach Nähe zu anderen und große Angst vor dem Alleinsein. Diese Charakteristika prägen das interpersonelle Verhalten im Allgemeinen und partnerschaftliche Beziehungen im Besonderen. Grundannahmen und Motive der Dependenten Persönlichkeitsstörung führen zu einem ängstlichen, submissiven und anklammernden Verhalten. Ein Leben ohne festen Partner ist nicht vorstellbar. Die Paarbeziehung nimmt im Leben der Betroffenen einen zentralen Stellenwert ein, und sie vermeiden auf jeden Fall, allein zu sein. Potenziell schädigende und positive Aspekte der dependenten Persönlichkeitszüge für das Individuum ebenso wie für die Partnerschaft werden aufgezeigt. Implikationen für die Psychotherapie und die psychotherapeutische Beziehung werden beschrieben. Kulturelle und gesellschaftliche Faktoren haben einen großen Einfluss auf die Einschätzung der dependenten Verhaltens- und Denkmuster als pathologisch.

„Addicted to love“ – love and the dependent personality disorder
The dependent personality disorder is characterized by difficulties with independent decision making , an excessive need of closeness to others and extreme fear of being alone. These characteristics mark the interpersonal behavior in general and intimate relationships in particular. Basic assumptions and motives of the dependent personality disorder lead to anxious, submissive and clinging behavior. Life without a steady partner is inconceivable. In the lives of the individuals their intimate relationship plays a central role, and they avoid being alone at all costs. Potentially damaging and positive aspects of the dependent personality traits for the individual as well as the relationship are described. Implications for psychotherapy and the psychotherapeutic relationshipare outlined. Cultural and societal factors exert a large influence on the assessment of dependent interactional patterns as pathological.

Partnerschaften, in denen mindestens ein Partner an einer Borderline- Persönlichkeitsstörung (BPS) leidet, sind durch häufige Beziehungsabbrüche, wiederholte intermittierende Trennungen, vermehrte Gewaltanwendung und insgesamt geringe Zufriedenheit in der Partnerschaft gekennzeichnet. Bislang gibt es kaum Studien, die gezielt die Ursache für die gestörte Beziehungsgestaltung in Paarbeziehungen bei Menschen mit BPS untersuchen. In dieser übersicht werden neuere empirische Befunde aus den Bereichen der Kognition, der sozialen Interaktion und der Sexualität zur BPS vorgestellt. Diese können einerseits die BPS-typische Partnerschaftsgestaltung verständlicher machen, andererseits Ansätze für psychotherapeutische Interventionen bieten.

Idealization and devaluation – romantic relationships and borderline personality disorder
Couples including a partner diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) show higher rates of separation, frequent episodes of break-ups and reconciliations, higher levels of violence and lower marital satisfaction. To date there is a limited number of studies assessing the possible causes of the disturbed romantic relationships in BPD. In this article we present empirical data on cognition, social interaction and sexuality for BPD. These data can help to understand borderline-typical behaviour in romantic relationships and may provide options for future psychotherapeutic interventions.

Die schwierigen und häufig wechselnden Partnerschaften von Berühmtheiten sind beliebter Gesprächsstoff in der Boulevardpresse. Dieser Artikel geht einer Theorie nach, dass in einigen Fällen die Ursache der häufigen Nähe-Distanz-Konflikte bei Beziehungen prominenter Stars in emotional instabilen Persönlichkeitsstörungen begründet liegt. Diese Störungen können einerseits die Ursache der problematischen zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen der Stars oder der häufig bestehenden anderen Symptome wie Depressionen, ängste, Substanzmissbrauch oder Essstörungen sein, die nach statistischen Untersuchungen im Vergleich zur Normalbevölkerung gehäuft auftreten. Andererseits sind diese Störungen offenbar mit einem erhöhten künstlerischen Kreativitätspotenzial verbunden. Eine neurobiologische Theorie versucht, diesen Zusammenhang über eine Dysfunktion des endogenen Opiatsystems und des damit verbundenen Belohnungssystems des Gehirns bei emotional instabilen Persönlichkeiten zu erklären.

Sex, Drugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll – love of the celebrities
The difficult and rapidly changing partnerships of celebrities are a popular topic in the tabloids. In the present article, a theory is posited that in some cases the nearness-distance conflicts in the relationships of prominent stars have its origin in emotionally instable personality disorders. On the one hand, these disorders may be the cause of the problematic interpersonal relationships and other symptoms, including depression, anxiety, substance abuse and eating disorders of famous people, which were found to be increased in comparison to the general public in statistical investigations. On the other hand, these disorders seem to be associated with an increased artistic creativity potential. A neurobiological theory attempts to explain this association by a dysfunction of the endogenous opiate system and the closely linked reward system in the brain of subjects with emotionally instable personality disorders.

Die Gewalt in Liebesbeziehungen stellt die Frage nach dem bedrohlichen Zusammenhang von Liebe und Hass. Zunächst werden einige sozialwissenschaftliche Befunde zur Gewalt in Intimpartnerschaften dargestellt, um einen Rahmen für psychodynamische Konzepte zu schaffen. In einem zweiten Teil wird die spezifische Psychodynamik von schlagenden Männern untersucht und diskutiert, inwieweit die psychoanalytische Konzeptualisierung von Persönlichkeitsstörungen einerseits und Perversionen andererseits hilfreich sein kann für das Verständnis von gewalttätigem Verhalten in Liebesbeziehungen. Mit dieser Frage möchte ich die spezifische Konstellation einer gewalttätigen Paarbeziehung in den Blick nehmen: den stetigen Wechsel von sexuellem Begehren und Gewalttätigkeit. Im dritten Teil schließlich beleuchte ich den Aspekt des Traumas: Als charakteristische Beziehungsdynamik in Gewaltbeziehungen sehe ich die traumatische Subjekt-Objekt-Verschmelzung, die aus der Introjektion des Angreifers resultiert.

»They kissed and beat each other ...« – violence in intimate partnerships
Violence in love relations leads to the question of the threatening connection of love and hate. In this paper, I will first show some sociologic findings on violence in intimate partnerships in order to create a frame for psycho-dynamical concepts. In the second part, the specific psycho-dynamics of beating men will be examined, and it will be discussed to what extent the psycho-analytic conceptualisation of personality disorders on the one hand and perversions on the other hand can be helpful to understand violent behaviour in love relations. With this question I would like to focus on the specific constellation of a violent partnership: the continuing change of sexual desire and violence. Finally, in the third part, I highlight the aspect of the trauma: I see the traumatic subject-object mergence resulting out of the introjection of the aggressor as a characteristic relation dynamic in violent relationships.

This paper presents a model of severe narcissistic pathology that integrates contemporary object relations theory with attachment theory and research and the allied concept of mentalization. The focus is on the contribution of each theoretical perspective to understanding the difficulties in the sphere of sexuality and love relations that often bring these patients to treatment. The paper also discusses the oedipal configurations that characterize individuals with severe narcissistic disorders and how they stem in part from envy of an idealized parental couple leading to deficits in mentalization, or the capacity to take varied perspectives on the self in relation to others. The attachment classifications most frequently found in individuals with severe narcissistic disorders, including the dismissing, preoccupied and cannot classify categories are also reviewed as well as research which links these attachment classifications to aspects of sexual functioning. The paper then presents a brief overview of transference focused psychotherapy (TFP), a manualized psychoanalytic treatment designed for severe personality disorders, with a focus on the interpretive process in TFP and how it has been refined for treatment of individuals with severe narcissistic pathology. Case material is presented from a narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) patient in TFP with whose primary presenting problems were in the arena of sexuality and love relations. The ways in which conflicts around sexuality and love relations were lived out in the transference is delineated with a focus on the recapitulation and systematic interpretation first of devalued representations of others, and then of the idealized representations of self and others that comprise the compensatory grandiose self that defensively protects the individual from an underlying sense of vulnerability and imperfection.
