The article focuses on the »psychotherapy guideline« regulating the use of psychoanalysis in the framework of German health insurance norms. The author begins with a discussion of the relation between psychoanalysis and patient treatment, proceeding from there to the history of the »guideline« and its compromise status. He then discusses individual aspects of the regulations and casts light on the theoretical background behind the guideline system. In the final section the author advocates major changes to the system.

The article investigates boredom in the clinical context and as a literary/philosophical subject, distinguishing it from neighboring phenomena such as idleness, listlessness, and laziness. Given the range of meanings accorded to boredom, extending from »horror vacui« (Kant) to »windless calm of the soul« (Nietzsche), the phenomenon of boredom patently defies clear definition. Accordingly, the author draws upon clinical vignettes to propose three characteristics and regulating functions of boredom: (a) a destructive form associated with »disobjectalization« (Green), (b) a form functioning as a defense against trauma-induced ego loss, and (c) boredom as a creative transitional space. Freud’s thoughts on the existence of »pleasurable tensions and unpleasurable relaxations« are placed in a drive-economic perspective revealing the very different qualities (pleasurable and unpleasurable) displayed by boredom.
Artificial intelligences (AI) trained to recognize images are known to make absurd errors. Seen in connection with scenarios on the future of AI, these errors take on an uncanny quality. True to Freud’s dictum, this eeriness has to do with the repression of things we are familiar with. To make his point, the author draws upon two versions of the origin of the ego, one as an adaptive apparatus taking shape in the contact between id and external reality, the other as a product of identifications. The ego is understood as something composite, and the uncanny quality of AI errors identified as their similarity to the productions of the ego in auto-eroticism. This poses the question of the extent to which research on the future of AI implies research into the human psyche.
