Emancipation and method
The author traces historically how, beginning with Breuer's treatment of Anna O. and her discovery of the »talking cure«, the therapeutic work was shifted from doctor to patient. The patient's story clarifies the societal content of life history and the history of suffering. In contrast to the conceptions of traditional science, psychoanalysis achieves a cure by lifting the artificial separation of individual and society within the doctor-patient relationship and by transforming the history of suffering into life history.
Staying on track: The »psychoanalytic movement« and the poverty of the psychoanalytic institution
The fate of lay analysis and training analysis shows how the »psychoanalytic movement« has been transformed into institutional structures of power politics. It can be seen that central positions of psychoanalysis have been sacrificed to senseless and alienating regimentation. Staying on track, we are reminded not only of the history of this deformation but of its possible revision.
The demise of an institution
The author retraces the dilemma from which psychoanalysis suffered from the very start of its institutionalization. To begin with, it was important to protect the new discipline against dissolution. However, its institutionalized form developed a dynamic of its own that eventually militated against its own enlightening substance. The author sketches the psychic and social frame within which this self-destruction occurs.
Fantasy and reality in psychoanalytic institutions
The forms of interaction and of training developed within the framework of bureaucratically organized psychoanalytic institutions are antithetical to the psychoanalytic aim of fortifying individual autonomy.
Jahrhunderts? Wieso stand Bernfeld zur offiziellen Psychoanalyse in »exzentrischer Position«?
In 1981 the studies on Freud by Siegfried and Suzanne Cassirer Bernfeld appeared for the first time in a collection in German translation. They evoke the discussion of three questions: What kind of science is psychoanalysis? What ist the relation of psychoanalysis to the trends of thought of the 19th century? Why did Bernfeld hold an »eccentric position« to orthodox sychoanalysis?
Borderline patients
The author relates the story of two young women who developed a borderline syndrome against the background of an unusually intense bond with their fathers.
