The public organization of feelings and the nuclear threat: The political psychology of war and peace
The potential for destroying the world cannot be permanently subdued unless the passionate drives of human nature are recognized as such on the individual as well as the collective Ievel. The drives and drive wishes which socialization inevitably seeks to suppress manifest themselves in (mostly unconscious) fantasies of omnipotence which the state exploits. Rather than to prevent the evil fueled by the drives, the state monopolizes it.
Chernobyl or Hiroshima?
The so called peaceful use of atomic power is an ideology specifically apt for appeasement in an illusionary way: although everyone could know about the desastrous effects of radioactivity since Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the civil use of atomic power serves to demonstrate, that the incompatibility of radio nucleids with health and life could be controled and mastered. In this context the civil use of atomic power appears as an instrument of social control.
Pathology and society: The psychology of nuclear energy
The author regards the pathological forcing of technical developments which threaten humanity as based on the societally promoted identification of individuals with paranoid ideas of grandeur.
Panic, the need for panic, and the processing of panic: Sociopsychoanalytic comments on contemporary processes of disintegration in connection with Chernobyl and AIDS
Among the reactions to Chernobyl and AIDS one may discern forms of denial of catastrophic threats to life. The media promote a displacement to irrelevant concerns, and this contributes to the psychologizing and individualizing of social conflict. As a consequence, the threats emanating from macrotechnology appear as neurotic anxiety. It is left to the individual and his defense techniques to overcome this. This reversal must be undone.
To refuse to be God: The psychoanalysis of belligerence
The illness belligerence derives from the intolerance for helplessness, weakness, Iimitation, and transiency. In the face of the threat of fatal annihilation, military and psychological armaments serve as regressive-narcissistic defense strategies against the »normal fear of death«. The abandonment of the illusion of omniscience and omnipotence would be a significant first step on the road to peace.
